Why has Time Management advice become such a hot topic in the self-help industry?

It's a very simple answer. We humans are terrible at managing our time.

As a general rule we tend to be lazy, we like to procrastinate, and the idea of showing up on time is foreign to most of us. We even coined a phrase to compensate for our bad time management known as "being fashionably late."

Is it any wonder that self-help gurus have capitalized on all of this!

The Challenge

Our daily lives are filled with lots of tasks and to-do lists. This can be overwhelming which leads to many of us getting caught up in busy work. We run around in circles, and at the end of our work day we scratch our heads in disbelief over not getting anything accomplished.

Busy work is the enemy to being productive.

The real challenge is too distinguish between busy work and productive work. The best time management strategy to help you do this is ..

The Eisenhower Matrix

Dwight D Eisenhower was the 34th President of the United States. He served as the Supreme Commander for the Allied Forces during WW2, and as if that was not enough he became NATOs first Supreme Commander. One can only imagine the amount of decisions that he had to make on a daily basis.

Born out of necessity he developed what became known as the Eisenhower Matrix to help prioritize tasks (aka Eisenhower Principle).

"What is important is seldom urgent, and what is urgent is seldom important"-Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The Eisenhower Matrix is made up of four quadrants. Each quadrant represents a different strategy on how best to manage your daily tasks.

Quadrant 1: Do Now

These tasks that are both urgent, and important. They should be your top priority.

Quadrant 2: Schedule

Any tasks that are not urgent but important should be scheduled.

Quadrant 3: Delegate

Tasks that are urgent but important can be delegated.

Quadrant 4: Eliminate

Tasks that are not urgent, and not important need to be eliminated. They kill your daily productivity.

The goal here is to focus on being productive instead of busy. Use the Eisenhower Matrix to ensure you are working smarter and not harder.
